In South Humber, the local authority welcomes large-scale industrial investment, and supports companies with services ranging from business-friendly planning to assistance finding sites and personnel.

South Humber is an established industrial area, with an economy built on sectors including the process industries, advanced manufacturing, ports and logistics, food manufacturing and offshore renewables.

The area’s local authority, North East Lincolnshire Council, recognises that industry is key to the area’s future success, and has developed an ambitious strategy to facilitate large-scale industrial investment and support investing businesses.

SHIIP – the South Humber Industrial Investment Programme

At the heart of the strategy is SHIIP, a project to deliver major new infrastructure and development-ready sites for industrial businesses. And it’s one of the biggest projects of its type in the UK – a £40 million programme covering 6 enterprise zone sites, totalling 189 hectares (467 acres) of development land. SHIIP’s innovative features include a major ecological mitigation project, to help investing businesses reduce project lead times and costs.

Dedicated support for investing businesses

Another key strand of the council’s strategy is Invest NEL – the local government agency dedicated to supporting businesses moving to or expanding in the area. On a free-of-charge basis, the agency delivers a range of support services to businesses, including:

• Help finding suitable sites and properties, and agent or developer introductions
• Help identifying potential grant funding for business investment
• Help accessing workforce recruitment, education and training solutions
• Help accessing local business networks, services and supply chains

What investing businesses say

Feedback from investing businesses highlights the fact that North East Lincolnshire Council welcomes industry, and has the planning procedures and support services in place to help businesses deliver projects successfully:

“We needed a location where the right people can be recruited and where the council and neighbours find us an attractive prospect. I couldn’t have asked for more positive support from the local authority”.
Neville Hargreaves, VP for Waste to Fuels, Velocys

“The local authority has been in continuous contact, and are very helpful with the planning process. They’re engaged with local stakeholders and have a good idea how to develop projects that fit in with local aspirations.”
Ged Russell, Technical Director, Vireol
