North East Lincolnshire
The SHIIP project lies along the South Humber Bank, within the local authority area of North East Lincolnshire.
With a population of 157,200 (2021), the authority area covers 191.9km and includes the main towns for Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham.
North East Lincolnshire itself hugs a stretch of the Humber Estuary, which is one of the busiest channels for shipping in the UK. The Port of Immingham alone is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, handling around 46 million tonnes of cargo every year.
Grimsby, the main town and administrative headquarters for North East Lincolnshire, was built on the fishing industry and by the 1950s was the busiest fishing port in the world. While the fishing industry’s decline saw the trawlers disappear, Grimsby evolved and became home to the UK’s leading cluster of food and seafood manufacturing, processing and service companies.
In recent years, the burgeoning offshore renewables sector has seen new investment, innovation, and opportunities a plenty come to the region. As the closest port to the mouth of the estuary, Grimsby has a competitive advantage when it comes to the operation and maintenance required for North Sea turbines. As a result, the giants of the sector have established their O&M operations in the town. If evidence was needed of just how established this ‘cluster’ now is, then it came in September 2019 when Orsted opened a new £14-million facility at Grimsby Royal Dock.
Grimsby’s close neighbour, Cleethorpes remains a popular East Coast seaside resort and is benefitting from significant private and public sector investment in recent years. Major rejuvenation projects are being carried out by North East Lincolnshire Council, and its regeneration partner EQUANS with grant-funding from organisations such as the Coastal Communities Fund and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Road
A central UK location providing fast motorway access to the M180, M18, M62 and M1/A1 via the A180. 90,000 people live within a 15-minute catchment of North East Lincolnshire and 350,000 within a 45-minute drive.
All of England’s major conurbations are accessible in less than 4.5 hours by HGV (i.e. one driver shift).
Rail
Both Grimsby and Immingham ports are connected to the UK rail network, with more than 300 rail freight movements per week handled at Immingham terminal. Both ports now benefit from W12 gauge rail access, enabling the transportation of ‘high cube’ containers.
Sea
The Port of Immingham provides direct sea freight connections to European and international destinations, including:
• 40+ lo-lo (container) and ro-ro services per week to Northern Europe, Scandinavia and Iceland
• Deep-sea feeder operations to Rotterdam, providing fast, frequent onward services to global markets
Air
Humberside Airport (HUY) is located just 7 miles from Immingham, providing:
• 7 days-per-week ‘hub-feeder’ services to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) airport – enabling fast connections to more than 800 global destinations (with KLM and Sky Team Partners)
• 4 x daily, 6 days-per-week services to Aberdeen (ABZ) (Eastern
Airways)
Discover North East Lincolnshire
As an area that sits on the banks of the Humber at the mouth of the North Sea, North East Lincolnshire enjoys unrivalled access to award-winning beaches, bustling market towns and an area of outstanding natural beauty (AOIB).
With house prices among the most competitive in the UK, there is an opportunity to live either in town centres, by the coast, or in stunning and unspoilt countryside – detached traditional or modern homes, often with land, will surprise many by their affordability, their design and their variety. In Grimsby town centre there are some wonderful examples of period homes – first built for the trawler owners who made their money on the docks. Meanwhile Cleethorpes has some lovely seafront homes and apartments.
If the countryside is desired, then the Lincolnshire Wolds is on the doorstep – just a ten-minute or so drive from North East Lincolnshire. Here you find old, traditional market towns and villages nestled in the hills. A designated AOIB, it is one of only a few areas that is relatively untouched by tourism and day visitors but beautiful for living, walking, cycling and equestrian pursuits. Once again, house prices will surprise many!
For those who enjoy sport, premier motor-racing circuit Cadwell Park lies just a half-hour drive from North East Lincolnshire, and the award-winning Market Rasen racecourse is a similar distance as you go into West Lindsey.
The historic city of Lincoln is on our doorstep too, with its Cathedral and Castle attracting visitors from across the globe. Then there’s the wonderful Humber Bridge with easy access to the Hull, a former City of Culture.
This region, with a relatively low population compared with the cities in other parts of the UK, has good schools with good class sizes. We are proud to boast an ‘outstanding’ further education college – the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education, which is also a University centre. There is also very good primary and secondary offer with two highly regarded private schools within Grimsby. In the wider Lincolnshire and Wolds’ regions there is the opportunity for a grammar school education.
